thousands of cases have been reported mostly in central and south america. in the united states, the centers for disease control has issued a travel alert for pregnant women. cbs 2's dr. max gomez here now to tell us how how much we
need to worry. reporter: the zika virus has been around since 2007. what's causing concern now is that it's been linked to a serious birth defect called microcephaly where the brain and head don't fully develop. zika virus is transmitted
through the bite of infected mosquitos the same ones that spread west nile. now, zika is not passed person to person. a mosquito bite is the only way except for pregnant women. they can pass the virus to their baby in the wombed
causing that brain de-- in the womb causing that brain defect. record in nearly caribbean, central and south american countries where the mosquitos are. the handful of u.s. cases have all been in people who travel
to these countries. zika formally causes a mild flu-like disease with aches, fever, joint pain and sometimes conjunctivitis or pink eye. but it might also cause a usually temporary paralysis called guiuan bar ray.
it lasts for up to a week and then the virus is generally cured from the system. when you talk about the places where the mosquitos thrive, where we are here, where it is colder, but standing water is an issue? they could come up here,
the mosquitos are going to be here, but we don't know whether any of them are carrying zika virus at this point.
